Pioneer honors
for
the 2005-2006 year:
NATIONAL
MERIT SCHOLARS
Twenty
one Pioneer students were National
Merit Scholarship Finalists this
year.
MATH
Of the 299 Pioneer students who took
the American Mathematics
Competition Test
this year, 33 qualified for part two, the prize round of the
test. Six Pioneer students finished
in the top 202 of more than 10,000 students who took the test.
BUSINESS
Four Pioneer High School students placed 1st in the State
Competition at the 60th
Annual DECA
State Career Development Conference. The
State DECA Conference
is one of the largest and most
competitive of all student organizations in Michigan with
over 2,100 students in attendance
from 157 Michigan High Schools.
CREATIVE WRITING
Six
Pioneer students represented Pioneer High School at an international
youth poetry competition
in New York City. The team finished tied for 7th overall out of
40 teams at this year’s Brave
New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival!
MUSIC
Pioneer's
Music Department
received the National GRAMMY
Signature School Award for
2005-2006! This award is
given to the BEST high school
music department in the nation!
Pioneer was named one of the top 7 music departments in the country for
both 2004-5 and 2003-4.
Band
- The Michigan School
Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA)
DISTRICT Band Festival
was held at Pioneer on March 11, 2006. The Pioneer High School Symphony and
Concert Bands each received First Division
Ratings. The
Concert Band received straight “A”s in all categories in Class B , with
a First Division rating from each concert judge, and the Symphony Band
received straight “A+”s in all categories in Class AA also with First
Division ratings from each concert adjudicator and the sightreading
judge. Eleven District 12 bands competed for this
state-qualifying event.
- The Michigan School
Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA)
DISTRICT Solo and Ensemble Festival was held on January 28,
2006. Students prepared a solo and/or an ensemble and performed for an
MSBOA Adjudicator. Their performance was evaluated and a rating between
"I" (Excellent) and "V" was assigned.
- Pioneer Band students
received 114 first division ("I") and 33 second division ("II") ratings
in SOLO competition, as well as 121 first division and 21 second
division ratings in ENSEMBLE competition.
- The Pioneer Concert Band "Won it All" in Toronto at the Festivals of Music InternationalCompetition. They were the only concert band to receive a
superior rating in Class AA; and are the winners of the William D.
Revelli Trophy and, as the highest scoring high school concert band
regardless of classification, the winner of the Dr. Tim Lutzenheiser
Esprit de Corps Award.
Orchestra
- The Michigan School
Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA)

MSBOA Adjudicator. Their performance was evaluated and a rating between
"I" (Excellent) and "V" was assigned.
- Forty-six Pioneer High School Orchestra
students received a rating of First Division, or "I" (Excellent) and 6
received a "II" (Good) for their performance of a District
SOLO. In the Ensemble
competition, 22 Pioneer students in ensembles received ratings of "I"
and 10 students received "II" ratings.
Vocal
Music
-
Three Pioneer High School Choirs had excellent results at the Michigan
School Vocal Music Association State Choir Festival
April 27 and 28, in the Potter
Center for the Performing Arts at
Jackson Community College.

Twenty-six
members of
the Pioneer Choirs participated in the Michigan
School Vocal Music
Association State Solo and Ensemble Festivall at Eastern Michigan University
on Saturday, February 11th. 26 performers
received 40 excellent, (1), ratings.
- Five members of the Pioneer Choirs
were selected to participate in the Michigan School Vocal Music
Association All State SATB and SSA (Junior High) Honors Choirs.
THEATER
- Pioneer Theater Guild placed
4th in the state one-act play competition with 'Elephant Man'.
- Pioneer Theater Guild won the
Golden Truck award for the best all-around backstage crew in the state
this year.
